IT'S MY PARTY...

As a club owner, the rules that you set for your club regarding staff and how you and others interact with patrons vary, but as a club owner myself there are a few things that work for mine and that I consider should be a general rule.

People go to SL events and clubs for a number of reasons; to meet people, to listen to a particular DJ, to play the sploder, but what draws a large percentage of crowds are contests. The simplest, most generic ones work, people -specially the LGTB community- love dressing up for an event and the larger the prize, the larger the crowd.

This is a dangerous tool though, because true, it will bring large crowds, but the more avatars you get on the same space with all sorts of scripted items, the larger your lag will be -added to the lag produced by the scripted items already present in the club- and people who go to big fat prizes events don’t always tip.

One very strict rule that we have in my club is that neither managers nor owners can EVER join a contest, and staff working the set can’t join either; something that doesn’t seem to apply to some clubs I have been to as a patron myself or a DJ. And there is a very good reason for this rule that we have and that works fine in our case. Just picture the situation as a patron: you hear of this 3000 L$ event with a very easy -or not- theme, you dress up for the occasion and as you TP, there’s already 10 people in the room and people keep on coming as the event progresses.

So you get a few friends to join and possibly vote for you when time comes and you decide to endure the lag, because either the music is great or the owner keeps on adding linden to the prize. Then the owner, the host and most staff join the contest along with patrons who specifically came for the contest -which is what you are basically selling when sending a notice- and at the end of the set, after 2 long hours of excruciating lag, either the Club owner -the one who put the money for the contest in the first place- or one of the working staff -those working for tips- win the contest and walk away from the set with a large sum of linden, how would that make you feel as a patron? Possibly and most likely pissed and not wanting to ever come back to the club.

The whole concept of “it’s my party/club and I do what I want with it” might seem fine for some people out there, but in my personal experience, a fun club where staff doesn’t worry about joining contests -not to mention the owners- is a lot more attractive and will in fact, make me come back again and again.

Partying is, whether it is SL or RL all about having fun, socializing and just generally having a good time, but getting a club filled with people on the promise of a big fat prize, so the owner ends up winning is, simply put, stepping on your own toes…
