Fantasy Island

There's a recent movement on history record keeping and investigation called "post-social" history, which basically questions the accuracy of how our knowledge of past events may have been biased by personal subjective on-look of them. So think about it, from the bible to yesterday's news, some of what we regard as facts may have been altered by the fact of how the person keeping records saw it happen.

This being real life or second life -more so in second life for the obvious reasons- some people take the time to tweak facts about their lives here and there to best fit what their wishes on what could have been or should be, but isn't. Second life does offer the advantage of people not being able to check if what you're telling them is true, so most of us go on blind faith.

During my small weekend getaway, I had the chance to meet a person whose elaborate fantasy accounts on his life simply fascinated me. I knew from the minute he started talking 90 % of what he was telling me was not true at all, but the details added to his fantasy were so intricate and precise I could not help but marvel at how complex it was. I guess some people need to compensate that way, by creating a small and personal fantasy island that is everything they wish it to be, this being RL or SL.

I don't mind at all, as long as your fantasy doesn't bring pain or suffering to those you interact with, you should be fine but here's an advice to those actually altering facts into half truths, at least do yourself the favor and make sure that what you're telling is so precise it can actually be confused with the truth, if not you'll look like a dumbass and it's insulting to those you're telling the story to.

Hay un reciente movimiento de investigación histórica llamado "historia post-social", que básicamente cuestiona la exactitud de nuestro conocimiento histórico basado en el hecho de que al haber sido plasmados, pueden haber sido influenciados por una perspectiva subjetiva.. Así que piensalo bien, desde la biblia hasta las noticias de ayer, lo que creemos y consideramos hechos pueden haber sido alterados por la persona que los reflejó y contó.

Sea esta la vida real ó el Second Life -incluso más en SL por las razones obvias-, algunas personas se toman la molestia de modificar hechos acerca de sus vidas aquí y allá, para que mejor encaje en lo que creen que debería ser su vida, pero no ha sido. El Second Life ofrece la ventaja de que las personas a los que les cuentas la historia, no tienen posibilidades de verificar si lo que cuentas es cierto, así que la mayoría contamos con el concepto de fe ciega.

Durante mi breve escapada de fin de semana, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a una persona, cuyas fantasías eran tan elaboradas que más que molestarme me fascinaron. Sabía desde el momento que empezó a hablar que el 90 % de lo que me contaba no era cierto, pero los detalles eran tan complejos y precisos que no pude más que asombrarme. Supongo que hay personas que necesitan compensar de esa manera, creando una pequeña y personal isla de la fantasia, que tiene todo lo que desean de RL o SL.


A mi realmente esto no me importa demasiado, siempre y cuando tu fantasía no haga daño a nadie, todo va bien pero he aquí un consejo para aquellos que modifican los hechos cambiandolos a medias verdades, asegurate de que lo que cuentas es tan preciso que pueda incluso ser confundido con la verdad, de lo contrario quedas como un imbecil y es insultante para aquellos a quien les estás hechando el cuento.
