Out with the old

And again, the time of the year when we make a quick review of everything we've done and accomplished -or failed to- has come upon us; interesting year as well, with all of the apocalyptic theories that have been tossed around, then again if you have been around as long as I have, the world has been ending ever since I can remember.

But apocalyptic theories aside, why do we have this impulse of looking back? some people may even add that what's done is done and let be bygones be bygones, but someone once said that without a clear reference of our past, we're bound to repeat it, over and over again, this being in RL or SL.

One thing I've learned through the years in SL and my interaction with all sorts of people, this being inside the clan -my immediate family-, with them who come and go and those who stay, or patrons that come to my sets and share moments with me and staff, is that with some, it pays off never to lose sight of those things past.

SL, as I have mentioned in previous articles, has the vantage point of allowing anyone to remain anonymous for a long period of time, or even still live several alternate lives, but our true selves always shine through, no matter how hard we try to hide it and something I have found very handy is to never let go of the past as a reference, because some people will always come back to your life time and time again under a different form and name, but that essence of who they are and were, still remains.

The past not always shapes our present but on some level defines our future, it is a great part of who we got to be and we would be different if our life experiences had changed even in the slightest; I am not saying we should hang on to our past, what we must however is keep it as a reference, learn from it and hopefully start the new year being better men and women, or at least making better choices from those we made and learned from in this long journey we call living; out with the old, in with the new...

Hangover leisure

So you had your fun, you wake up feeling like a truck ran over you, while an orchestra of cats play the violin inside your head and -if you were lucky-, you wake up to a hunky someone sipping coffee in your kitchen.

What is there to do while you regain consciousness and start feeling human again? New years is usually a day of lots of sleeping but also, a day of simple brainless leisure that does not require a lot of thinking.

So while you drink lots of liquids -usually recommended for hangovers, that's basically your liver screaming for water- here is a top 10 list of movies -categorized from more brain effort to less- that I find both fun to watch over and over and that fit all tastes.

10. Gone with the wind: An american classic, a manipulative woman and a roguish man carry on a turbulent love affair. The movie is both surprisingly gripping and funny at the right times and will have you busy for a few hours.

9. Little Shop of Horrors: Science fiction, Rick Moranis, a simple story, some song... I specially like the dentist character.

8. Constantine: Ok, so it's not the most cerebral script ever, but Keanu is decent and so are the special effects. If you have not seen this one, expect a few plot surprises.

7. Hairspray: Yes, I am that gay and I have included the new Zack Efron / John Travolta version on this one. I like this movie, it's fun to watch the tunes are catchy and Nikky Blonsky is fantastic in my opinion.

6. Sound of Music: An all-time favorite classic to watch with your loved ones and remember the good old days. Julie Andrews at her best.

5. Tootsie: Dustin Hoffman playing a woman. A pure reflection of New York and actors at that time struggling to find work and how dating happened -which has not changed much if you ask me-

4. Death Becomes her: Eternal beauty and immortality, desperate people look for desperate measures. The script is brilliant and all actors incredible, dark humor and lines to quote for all occasions

3. Mr & Mrs. Smith: The fetish movie for all brangelina fans. The one where they fell in love. I specially like the extended non-theatrical version -there are a few extra scenes that add more depth to the story-

2. Americas Sweethearts: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julia Roberts are brilliant -and they are not exactly my actresses of choice-, I won't go into details but this one is a must see if you feel like having a few laughs while being entertained.

1. Fright Night (2011): Rebooting classics is something I never like, nor support but I have to say that in some areas this one exceeds the original. I'd let Colin have his way with me if he was my neighboring vampire too!

New Year Resolutions

There are always a number of things we wish to change or improve about ourselves, and days such as New Years offer us the chance to do some introspection, carefully inspecting our rights and wrongs and making promises of things which most of the time, we won't carry to completion.

Pottery classes, a new language, perhaps some minor surgery to look better. I personally don't go for anything big when planning for the new year; all I want out of the new year is for my family, this being second life or real life to be happy, to grow as an individual with each thing life throws at me and learn from it.

I won't refuse some celebrational sex though, so let's see if anyone out there is up to the challenge. As always, drive safe, don't drink and drive and if your engaging recreational nudity, use protection. To all of the readers out there, Happy New Year 2012 and thank you for the support and comments, I may not reply quickly but I do take the time to read them all and any feedback is always appreciated

The Cup..

In these days of holiday season, partying and quiet reflection about the upcoming year, it is always wise to plan ahead. There are many methods about doing this, you can make a list to follow with things you want to improve or change, you can improvise while focusing on a goal -play it by ear kind of concept., but what I have found to be more effective is a mental picture a friend gave me recently.

Imagine that you have 2 cups, in one you fill all your have, your past, your belongings and responsibilities, everything that it's past goes in there. When you're done filling that cup, it goes to a locked drawer; no one can open it or see what's inside but you.

Then on top of the drawer you have an empty cup, exactly like the one in the drawer, but empty. This is your future, your dreams, your plans, your imagination, everything you expect to happen will come from there and is there, on top of the desk for everyone to see.

Sometimes we pretend to fill the cup which is on top of the desk and meant to be empty with things from the cup in the drawer, thinking this will help, but that is not often the case, that cup like the new year has to be filled with new things, which will make the ones in store, better.

I plan to keep that cup empty and fill the other one with new things which will become my experiences, because, what's past is past and can only do one thing and that is holding you back.
